Il Ritorno d'Ulisse in Patria, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, November 2013
Directed by Mark Hathaway, everything about this presentation throws intriguing focus on the characters – Andreas Backlund’s bold and interesting Ulisse, Hazel McBain’s charismatic Minerva, Arshak Kuzikyan’s stentorian Nettuno, Eirlys Myfanwy Davies’ molten, golden-hued Penelope, and the striking tenor duo of Matthew Morgan (Eumete) and Luperci de Sousa (Telemaco), to name but a few in this sizeable cast.

Il Ritorno d'Ulisse in Patria, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, November 2013
One advantage of this show, for the RCS, is there are so many solo parts. Andreas Backlund (Ulisse) and Eirlys Myfanwy Davies (Penelope) are well matched in power and hints of dark colour. Hazel McBain is a pure and beautiful Minerva, edging closest to being at home with the baroque style. Matthew Morgan produces a golden sound as Eumete.

Matthew is an enormously accomplished musician and has spent three years as a choral scholar in the Cathedral choir. He has also performed as a soloist on multiple occasions, in concerts both in and out of the cathedral. Next year, Matthew will be taking up a place at the prestigious Royal Academy of Music in London, and should most certainly be considered as ‘one to watch’ over the coming years.
